There's actually more trees in the US now than 100 years ago and the forestry industry has really recognized the need for long term sustainability so that's a good thing too. Can't change the history of how our current land use came to be, we can only be better stewards of it moving forward. I joke about cotton fields growing houses, but yeah, a growing population means people gotta live somewhere and might as well build in places that are already clear cut. Couple that with the ridiculous layout of isolated subdivisions connected in one or two spots to over-burdened main roads (SimCity anyone?) and there's our recipe for strip malls as far as the eye can see. People want it both ways.that big McMansion and inside the city. Typical American mentality is bigger = better. Even 2500 was considered pretty damn big. 3000 square feet for a family of 4 when I was kid was an extreme outlier. Enough people want that so that's what we get. No one is shoving these subdivisions with all that stone veneer and a smattering of vinyl siding down anyone's throats. Yeah, I like to bitch about it, but the fact remains that builders build what people buy. I chose to live even farther away - past the burbs - so am I not allowed an opinion because I'm not a city mouse? People in these Madison city boughie neighborhoods want all their hair and nail salons and whatever kitschy shit they find necessary within a 10 min drive.enter the strip mall. Ol Sunshine gets upvoted for poopooing strip malls and I get downvoted for pointing out the suburban sprawl that makes those very same strip malls a thing. I'm really not comprehending why all the angst.

When the builder came through and built a number of houses on this parcel, they did a really nice job of keeping as many large mature oak trees as possible - it was one of the selling points for me. The land was wooded and not developed until 2006.

The topography of where my house is built is not conducive to cultivation. Was never a farm? So from the beginning of time it’s always been a single family home? (code_name_Bynum)
